Everyone Sells, Including AI: Nurture, Retail Media, and AI Governance with Mark Kapczynski
PodcastsEveryone Sells, Including AI: Nurture, Retail Media, and AI Governance with Mark Kapczynski
The Clarity Digital Pod is back with a new format and a new co host. In this relaunch episode, Al Sefati is joined by Delilah Adrian, founder of Bloom Marketing Consulting and Growth Strategist at Clarity Digital, as the show's ongoing co host. Their first guest is Mark Kapczynski, founder of Kontrol Media and author of the new book Everyone Sells, Including AI.
Why "Everyone Sells" Is a Marketing Idea, Not Just a Sales Slogan
Mark opens with the thesis of his book. Most companies preach that everyone sells, but only salespeople ever get sales training. Marketing, product, HR, finance, and engineering are all selling every day, whether they are pitching a strategy internally, recruiting talent, or convincing the board on a roadmap. The problem is that the rest of the organization has never been taught what selling actually is.
His definition reframes it. Sales is not a transaction and it is not the used car cliche. Sales is trust, influence, and storytelling applied over time. Once marketers accept that framing, the wall between marketing and sales starts to disappear and the two functions can finally align on how to move a prospect through a real journey.
The Lost Art of Mid Funnel Nurture
Delilah, Al, and Mark spend a large part of the episode on what has quietly become the biggest gap in modern marketing: nurture. Performance marketing has collapsed most programs into two extremes, top of funnel brand awareness and bottom of funnel conversion, while the middle of the funnel has been abandoned.
Mark's point is direct. Brands chase the "perfect person at the perfect moment" and refuse to pay for anything but a CPC or a booked meeting. Meanwhile the leads they do capture sit in a CRM without a real nurture path. In an economy where buyers take longer to decide, the brands that rebuild mid funnel nurture, especially in B2B and considered purchases, are the ones that keep pipeline predictable.

Retail Media and Commerce Media, Honestly
Kontrol Media works deeply in retail and commerce media, including with Remax. Mark explains the practical difference: retail media networks sit on retailers that transact on site (Amazon, Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons, Target), while commerce media covers consumer sites where the transaction happens off platform, like Remax.
His honest take on the category is worth hearing. A few years ago every retailer with traffic launched a retail media business because a consulting deck told them to. Many are now scaling back because ad sales is a different skill than merchandising, and advertisers keep concentrating spend on Amazon, Walmart, Google, and Meta where scale is unmatched. The winners are the networks that get creative beyond banner inventory and treat retail media as a real sales and partnership motion.
Personalization at Scale Is Available. Almost No One Uses It.
The group agrees on a frustration Al summarizes well: the AI stack for dynamic ads, dynamic landing pages, and personalized funnels already exists, but most advertisers are still recycling a TV cutdown into a display ad and pointing everything at one generic landing page.
Delilah shares a personal moment that illustrates the fix. She never clicks LinkedIn ads, but two weeks ago she clicked one that included her name and hit her exact role. That single touch of personalization was enough to move her into a demo, an email thread, and a booked call. The lesson: connecting the ad to a dynamic landing page and using AI to shape both around what you know about the visitor is the highest leverage move most performance marketers are still ignoring.
Marketers Need Sales Training Too
Mark makes a pointed observation. The performance marketers running conversion funnels almost never receive formal sales training. They know how to build a landing page and read a dashboard, but they have not been taught the psychology of trust, objection handling, and storytelling that actually converts humans.
The unlock for most organizations is not another tool. It is cross training. Marketing learns sales fundamentals. Sales learns how modern marketing builds demand. That is how alignment stops being a slide in the QBR and starts showing up in the pipeline.
AI Governance Is Now Non Negotiable
The conversation closes on AI governance, a topic Al and Delilah have been pushing with CMOs all year. Al shares a recent example: a CMO handed him a "strategy" that promised 50 percent growth from a site relaunch, generated straight out of ChatGPT without ever looking at the company's real analytics. That is the failure mode when there is no governance in place.
Mark agrees. AI is not a replacement for a marketing or sales team, it is a tool that amplifies whatever process, tone, and judgment you already have. Without a documented governance framework, teams over trust the output, ship hallucinations, and make expensive mistakes. With one, AI becomes a genuine force multiplier for research, creative, and campaign operations.

Where AI Still Needs a Human in the Loop
Mark's practical guidance on AI is nuanced. He is bullish on AI for market research, media planning support, creative variants, and analysis inside tools like GA4 with Gemini. He is cautious about handing AI the "stop button" on a live paid campaign. Today's models can still burn through significant budget before recognizing that a test is not working. Humans stay in the loop on execution and budget guardrails.
Al closes with a line adapted from The Matrix: it is not us versus them, it is us and them. AI plus humans, not AI instead of humans, is the operating model that wins in 2026.
Key Takeaways
- Everyone in the company sells, and marketers should embrace the label because it forces clearer strategy and stronger internal influence.
- Mid funnel nurture is the most under invested part of modern marketing, and it is the fastest way to stabilize pipeline in a soft economy.
- Retail media works at Amazon and Walmart scale. Smaller networks win only when they get creative beyond display inventory.
- Dynamic ads plus dynamic landing pages powered by AI are available today and dramatically outperform generic funnels.
- Performance marketers need sales training. Cross training between sales and marketing solves alignment faster than any new tool.
- AI without governance is a liability. A written policy, an approved tools list, and human review protect brand, revenue, and search visibility.
